Initially, it was related to agricultural activities, marking the new year and praying for good harvests. For example, during the Qin and Han Dynasties, more detailed rituals and celebrations were added, such as wearing new clothes, paying respects to ancestors, and setting off fireworks. One of the main reasons I like the Spring Festival is because of the family reunions. In modern life, family members often work or study in different places, scattered all over the country or even around the world. But during this festival, everyone makes great efforts to return home. Just imagine, after a whole year of being apart, the moment when we sit around a big table, enjoying the delicious food together and sharing stories about what happened in the past year. For instance, last year, my elder brother, who was working in another city, came back with lots of interesting stories about his job. We listened attentively and teased him about some funny incidents at his workplace. It was such a precious time that made us feel the deep bond within the family.

Another aspect I adore is the abundant traditional customs. Red couplets are always pasted on the doors, which are believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. Every household is decorated with red lanterns, creating a bright and festive ambiance. Fireworks are set off on New Year's Eve. When the colorful fireworks light up the sky, it's like a grand performance. The sound is deafening but filled with joy and excitement. Children are especially thrilled by it. They jump and shout with glee. Moreover, giving red envelopes (hongbao) containing money is a common practice. It not only brings financial blessings but also symbolizes the elders' love and wishes for the young. I remember once receiving a hongbao from my grandparents with the words "study hard and grow up healthy" written on it. It made me feel extremely loved and encouraged.

The special food during the Spring Festival is also a highlight. Dumplings (jiaozi), made of thin dough wrappers filled with various ingredients like pork, beef, vegetables, etc., are a must-have dish. Making dumplings is a family activity. Everyone gets involved in the process, from kneading the dough to preparing the fillings and finally shaping the dumplings. It's not just about the food itself but also about the sense of togetherness and tradition. Another typical food is the New Year cake (niangao), which has a symbolic meaning of "a higher and better year". There are many different ways to make niangao, some are sweet and some are savory. I prefer the one with red dates inside, as it has a sweet taste that symbolizes a sweet life ahead.
